Roadtrip photo intro

Dearest ones,

“I have arrived!”

After two and a half days of U-Haul travel from Tucumcari, N.M., my cousin Andre and I made it to the pebbly shores of Crescent City, Calif.

Since many of you enthusiastically requested a rundown of my road trip, I’ve compiled some photos below.

Before viewing, however, please note several things:

1. Start at the BOTTOM PHOTO of the buffalo painted on the U-Haul and work your way upwards or it makes no earthly sense.

2. Thank GOD my cousin Andre came to help me. Not only did he help load, unload and single-handedly put my ugly couch in its new location, but flawlessly drove the U-Haul (except for the flat tire in Albuquerque). He was the one who made sure the U-Haul didn’t tip over when the thing started to rock back and forth madly.

3. U-Hauls tend to sway back and forth madly when the “grandmother’s attic” part, that says not to load over 300 pounds, is full of 22 boxes of books.

4. U-Hauls tend to rock back and forth madly when you are on winding, mountainous roads, especially with a bogged down “grandmother’s attic.”

5. We arrived safe and somewhat sound. I only had one mini-breakdown when we ran into a rock slide delay…but that’s about equivalent to the U-Haul (which tends to rock back and forth madly when you are on winding roads with a bulging “grandmother’s attic”).

6. Before taking a U-Haul, make sure you don’t overload “grandmother’s attic.”

Check out the photos – let me know what you think!

With love, relief and the stringent urge to hug redwood trees,
Ryn.

I left my cousin Andre with a hug, with love and with a handmade Lucky Voodoo doll parting gift. Try getting that as a parting gift on some silly game show. Andre chose Inga, one I made back in New York. In addition to the doll and the hug, I also hope I left him with fond memories of cousinhood and how big chunks of the U.S. sort of look like New Mexico.

It seems they even had healthy airplane food, based on the sign by a nearby airport building.

Voila! We arrived without a hitch, except the one that still thankfully connected the car trailer to the U-Haul, and we even found a lucky stick held here by Andre and now in the back of my car somewhere.

When we visited Crescent City in the light, we were totally in awe.

I drove Andre to the Crescent City airport which was smaller, he said, than my new apartment.

Andre said he had a hankering to swim to the big rock out yonder, but we had to get to the airport.

We were finally on the road again after the two hour rockslide delay. It was a winding road for another 200 miles or so, not that we could see much of its windy-ness it the pitch black, which made it all the more adventuresome.

By now the dashboard had become a total junk bin, as did the rest of the truck, as we finally arrived in Crescent City, headed to my home 14 miles east in Gasquet, and went to sleep.

By the end of day three, especially after the two hour delay due to the Hwy 299 rock slide, we were in sour spirits. Andre was probably extra teed off since I was crying the delay was his fault. He took it maturely, however, and didn't dump me out the side door of the U-Haul.

Even Little Man had had enough after the rock slide delay and went back in his Triscuit box.

A sign that should have warned us we would be wasting time during the two hour delay on Hwy 299 for the rock slide.

Dangerous creatures emerged while we were wasting time during the two hour delay on Hwy 299 for the rock slide. Really this is a statue in Albuquerque, while I was wasting time to get the tire fixed.

The guy in this truck yelled at me when I took a picture wasting time during the two hour delay on Hwy 299 for the rock slide. His yelly-ness made me cry even harder. Now I'd never get to my new home and some deputy sheriff man guy was yelling at me, to boot.

I thought this sign was really cute and was trying to get a photo of it all during our roadtrip. Its cuteness ceased when we were wasting time during the two hour delay on Hwy 299 for the rock slide. I had more than ample opportunities to photo this sign from every conceivable angle.

Alas, we soon found out why we were told not to take Highway 299. Here we were stopped for nearly two hours due to a rock slide. Here I threw a hissy fit and cried I would never get to my new home. Here I killed time taking pictures of things.

Trees beckoned with open branch arms as we neared our ultimate California destination.

We took the scenic route for our final California stretch, even though my new landlord recommended the safer and longer route through Oregon. Highway 299 looked shorter on the map up to the coast and we were enjoying the view.

Things began to get really glorious in California when our landscape turned to mountains and water. It also assured us for real we were no longer in New Mexico.

Even Little Man dug the strawberries, which is why this picture is blurry. He was jumping up and down in glee so hard the U-Haul was rocking.

We were rocking through California on day three, with FRESH STRAWBERRIES, a delicacy I haven't had my entire time in New Mexico.

The California landscape even quelled us enough we forgot we were crampy and cripply and cranky.

Another California stop we made, being the diligent U-Haulers that we were, was a weigh station in Chowchilla where they didn't even weigh us and Andre called it stupid.

The Mexican grocery was teeming with delicacies like chicken feet.

The best truck stop stop in California was a Mexican grocery we found, where you could do your laundry next door or get your palm read across the street.

Andre changed into a red shirt just to shop at the Mexican grocery we found on one California truck stop stop.

We soon entered California olive, almond and glassblower territory, further convincing us we were heading in the right direction.

When the rice patties turned into a river for which they needed at least two bridges, we knew we were no longer in New Mexico and figured it has to be California or somewhere in Idaho. We hoped it wasn't Idaho.

Our first truck stop stop in California left a lot to be desired. But at least they had bathrooms.

The potential rice patties got so large they engulfed us, and made us hungry.
Roadtrip from Tucumcari, N.M., to Crescent City, Calif., Feb. 2006.

Once we hit rice patties, or at least what we presumed were rice patties, we were not sure where we were, although the map still said California.
Roadtrip from Tucumcari, N.M., to Crescent City, Calif., Feb. 2006.

It seems we definitely made a wrong turn and, instead of being in California, we were back in New Mexico. Although this could be a photo of New Mexcio.
Roadtrip from Tucumcari, N.M., to Crescent City, Calif., Feb. 2006.

One more figment confused us again. It didn't make us think we were in California or New Mexico, but the bowels of Detroit.
Roadtrip from Tucumcari, N.M., to Crescent City, Calif., Feb. 2006.

Alas, we were finally convinced we were, in fact, in California when we saw these tally pointed trees.

Eastern Caifornia looked so much like New Mexico we started seeing mirages on the California landscape.

By the time we hit Barstow, Calif., we were wholly sure we WERE in New Mexico.

Early California enamored us as it was green. But the flatness wholly reminded us of New Mexico.

On day three of our trek, we awoke refreshed, revitalized and ready for action. We also finally noticed the sticker that tells you what you are supposed to do when you get a flat tire, instead of scrambling around like we did two days ago.
